About US

The Sarasota Zen Meditation Society hosts zazen and discussion sessions on Sunday nights for anyone wishing to learn more about Zen or Buddhism or to practice these disciplines. We welcome anyone who wants to join us, even on an irregular basis.

candlesThe Group provides a setting in which those interested in Buddhism, Zen or just living in peace and harmony can participate in the Eastern discipline and enhance their life practice.

Sessions are held every Sunday night at 7 pm in our zendo at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota (map here) and are open to anyone free of charge. Leaders present one facet of Buddhism for  discussion, either by reading a tract by a master, listening to a recorded dharma talk, or watching a master on video.

This is followed by a period of zazen (Zen meditation).

We welcome everyone, beginners as well as experienced Zen practitioners.

More information is available through email at zen@uusarasota.org.

Co-leaders Don DeMaio and Paul Lewis have an abiding interest and engagement in Zen Buddhism. Mr. Lewis has studied and practiced Zen for the past 33 years and can speak to the history and practice of Buddhism worldwide. Mr. DeMaio is a lifelong student of Buddhism.
To quote the late great composer Leonard Bernstein:
“Stillness is our most intense mode of action. It is in our moments of deep quiet that is born every idea, emotion, and drive which we eventually honor with the name of action. We reach highest in meditation, and farthest in prayer. In stillness every human being is great.”
